Understanding Products | Internet Marketing

The term ‘products’ is an umbrella term that refers to tons of different items. In the weight loss industry, for example, a product could be a special diet food, a diet drink, a tool for measuring body fat, or a book about how to lose weight. It could be a set of laminated menu cards or exercise equipment, like bands or free weights. It could be an exercise DVD or a bottle of diet pills. The kind of product is only limited by your imagination.
Choosing the right product is important, not just for making money, but also in terms of your own satisfaction. If you are not selling a product you feel passionate about, you may not enjoy what you are doing. So it is vital that you choose something you truly love and feel strongly about. This may be related to your hobby, your work, or a talent or skill tyou possess. The best way to choose a product is to brainstorm the different interests that you have and write down related items you might sell.
One thing that you as a seller and marketers must understand is that people don’t just buy products. They buy the benefits of the product. You might find three people who all purchase a certain diet drink, for example, but upon investigation you find that one buys it because there are zero calories, one because the added vitamins are good for his health, and one because he likes the ease of preparation and the taste. So each person buys the product, but each has a different view of the benefits of the drink.
In order to research why people are buying a particular product, it is important that you do not go by their words. People don’t really even know why they purchase merchandise. Or sometimes they do know but they hide the true reason behind an altruistic one. So as a marketing professional, you must not go by what they say.
Instead, study their actions. What do they buy? What are the secondary products they purchase? What are the emotions behind those purchases? For example, someone might purchase a certain vehicle because he looks good driving it. Or a certain piece of software might give him more confidence to build a website. Or a book about investing might help increase their feeling of financial security. In other words, figure out how your product will make your customer feel, and you will know the secret to selling him products.
